Tentative plans are being drawn up for either a new or reconstructed elementary school in Randolph.
The management and design teams brought plans for a facility to educate students currently attending the Lyons Elementary School to the Randolph Town Council Sept. 14.
Officials reduced five potential options to two: the Lyons School property, or the former Devine School location, both in North Randolph.
The project, if approved, would cost an estimated $52 million. The town hopes it would qualify to get reimbursed for $28,930,354 by the Massachusetts School Building Authority, leaving $23,358,438 to be picked up by the town. An override likely would have to pass for that to happen.
But that’s down the road for the project that got its roots in 2018.
Randolph Public School Superintendent Thea Stovell emphasized the need for better building.
“I want a new or renewed school,” she said at the meeting. “There is severe overcrowding. We have used all space and sub-divided every space. There are issues with the current heating, plumbing, and electric service in the school. Kids are sitting on stages and in corridors.
“We have used every bit of space. How do we make this a better learning environment experience? The building has outlived its use. We cannot continue a quality educational experience.”
